PENNY PRESS: AN HOMAGE TO PRINT JOURNALISM IN GAME FORM

PENNY PRESS icon.png

Okay, I'm a huge Tabletop Deathmatch fan. Which is why I was really excited to review Penny Press. It won the contest. If you're interested, watch the designers' pitch and the judges' discussion, as well as the finale.

(Tabletop Deathmatch, by the way, is a game design contest put on by Cards Against Humanity — I know, but it's really good — and judged by some amazing people in the tabletop gaming world.)

If you'd rather read than watch — or if you'd rather not deal with my sense of humor — you can check out my review of Penny Press at News for Shoppers.

OTHER REVIEWERS' OPINIONS

Game Boy Geek Dan King said he loves Penny Press and called it a good entry into area control.

Board to Death had lots of praise for the strategy and accessibility of the game. They were a little worried that the game might start to feel repetitive.

Cody, The Discriminating Gamer, said he was pleasantly surprised by Penny Press. He was especially impressed with the way game integrates its theme.

FOR NEWBIES

There's nothing intimidating about this game, but I wouldn't start with two players for the Newsboy Strike expansion.

In fact, this is a great game for people new to board games.

KID-FRIENDLY?

Technically, no.

This game is rated for ages 13 and up. There's a reason for that. Often it's due to components that could, in theory, be swallowed. Maybe your 10-year-old thinks it would be funny to eat little wooden people? I don't know.

However, I think as far as gameplay goes, a very savvy 10-year-old might be able to play this one, though probably not as well as adults.

Let the younger ones play at your own risk, but know this might be fun for them. And they might learn a little history along the way.

Ooh. Sneaking in some learning. Got to love that.

RULES I GOT WRONG (BECAUSE I USUALLY DO)

Actually, I only got one thing wrong. When we first started playing, we moved up the beat marker every time we added a reporter of a new color.

We were supposed to move it only if reporters were placed on a new story. Oops.

WHAT MY HUSBAND WANTS TO CHANGE

Absolutely nothing. Because it's that awesome.
