HUE

I confess to asking Lowe's for lots of paint samples of the same colors in a particular color family so I could make a work of abstract art for my bathroom. This was about 15 years ago, before paint chip art was cool.

And, just to be clear, I'm no artist. There are no photos of said piece of art, which is a good thing. Because it's just squares on a poster board. Still, I thought it was better than a blank wall.

HUE reminds me of those days when I had no money but plenty of creativity. You get to play with little squares and rectangles of color.

I made a video about it, but if you'd rather read the quick version (without my humor included), you can do so at News for Shoppers.

OTHER REVIEWERS' OPINIONS

There aren't a lot of reviews of HUE out there yet, but here are a couple:

Zee Garcia at The Dice Tower said he likes the game a lot and called it "excellent." He praised the clean design and scoring.

Edo Baraf at Edo's Game Reviews takes a look at the whole Pack O Games. He said, "They're fun. They're little nuggets of mechanics. ... They're a pleasure."

FOR NEWBIES

HUE is actually a great game for newbies. It's easy to understand. The rules are well written and clear. Perplext Games also includes a link to an instructional video (but of course you just watched mine, right?).

There's nothing complicated, but do remember that your middle color (either horizontal or vertical) gives you a score multiplied by two.

KID-FRIENDLY?

The box says HUE is for ages 8 and up. I think that's about right. A younger player would probably have a hard time grasping how to bluff, but there's nothing so complicated that a child couldn't play. And if kids telegraph what they're working on, nice adults could avoid poisoning their plans.

HUE is a great game for introducing spatial concepts, and the scoring has just enough complication to give kids a bit of math practice without being overwhelming.

WHAT MY HUSBAND WANTS TO DO TO THE GAME:

Play it more often. Seriously. That's it.

(That was him happily parting with his cash in the video, by the way. And that's something he rarely does. He's frugal.)

RULES I GOT WRONG (BECAUSE I PRETTY MUCH ALWAYS DO):

I actually didn't get any of the rules wrong when I played the game. But the first video I made had a rules mistake because it had been a bit since I had played and I relied on my memory. Which is a bad idea. Really bad.
